According to the CDC’s “Options for Evaluating Environmental Cleaning” report dated December 2010
DEVELOPING PROGRAMS
“In view of the evidence that transmission of many healthcare acquired pathogens (HAPs) related to contamination of near-patient surfaces and equipment, all hospitals are encouraged to develop programs to optimize the thoroughness of high touch surface cleaning as part of terminal room cleaning at the time of discharge or transfer of patients.” (1)
DOCUMENTING IMPROVEMENT
“..the APT system has been used to broadly document significant improvement in daily cleaning as well as to provide quantitative measurement to indicate the level of cleanliness of high touch surfaces.” (2)
DECREASED CONTAMINATION
“Decreasing environmental contamination may help to control the spread of some antibiotic resistant bacteria in hospitals.” (3)
